HOW TO FLOSS OUT A STUCK PIECE OF FOOD

Sometimes flossing can become a challenge, especially if a piece of food gets stuck between a tight space of your teeth. To remove the food, try the following steps first. If all else fails, you will need to contact our office. By knowing the right way to floss, you usually can remove the food by using patience and perseverance.

USING THE RIGHT METHOD TO FLOSS

To use string floss properly, wrap about 18 inches of floss around your two middle fingers, with the remaining floss wrapped around the fingers you prefer on the other hand. Hold the string between the thumbs and forefingers so the thumbs and index fingers can move the floss. Maneuver the floss between the teeth, curving the string against a tooth until it meets the gum line. Gently slide the floss between the gum and tooth. Make sure to hold the floss firmly to remove the food particle. Don’t yank hard or get frustrated. Methodically and firmly maneuver the floss to dislodge the food. If this does not work, you should contact our office immediately. If you have tried in every way to remove the stuck food, you need to schedule an appointment.

AVOIDING PROBLEMS WITH STUCK FOOD

When you do eat food, make sure you chew your food thoroughly. That way, any food particles will be smaller and easier to remove. Also, you will have less problems with food getting stuck if you avoid stringy and hard-to-chew foods. Avoid foods that tend to cling to the teeth as well, such as sticky or sweet foods. Carefully chew your foods, making sure they are thoroughly eaten before putting more food in your mouth. Take time to savor what you eat. Don’t be in a hurry. By taking this approach, you will also make brushing and flossing easier.
